Streetscape and public space improvements at historic ski village

The pedestrian streets and plazas in the historic pedestrian zone of Vail Village were showing their age.  The Town of Vail undertook a process of upgrading these public spaces to capitalize on the unrealized potential to enhance visitors’ experience and to remain competitive as a world-class ski resort.

Wenk Associates worked with the Town to oversee close to $15 million in major streetscape and public space improvements in the heart of the Village, strengthening the retail environment and providing new opportunities for public gatherings and festivals.  A distinctive identity for the Village was established through the development of a consistent vocabulary of furnishings and site treatments. Improvements expanded informal seating areas and extended pedestrian zones to enhance retail activity.  The iconic Children’s Fountain was renovated and is now one of the most popular gathering places in the community.

Construction work was phased over five years with impacts to retail minimized by working closely with the Town staff and contractors to limit construction to shoulder seasons.
